CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Plum

I can’t even open my eyes. Someone came down to feed me when I couldn’t even sit up. I don’t even want to list the vile things Sawyer and his men did to me. If I didn’t have any broken bones before, I do now.

I hate him. I hate my mother. I heard her in the corner laughing in glee like she was watching her favorite movie. I tried to ask about Lyra and I wish I hadn’t.

She tried to stick up for me, to get me out of this and Sawyer had his men beat her. His men left her to die in her basement of her house. She was alone. I tear up just thinking about her dying alone. She wasn’t very nice in the end, but I have to say it was the drugs.

Growing up, she wasn’t the mean one—my mother was. When we were kids, Lyra was always sweet but had a protective side to her. I love my sister and miss the old her. We loved watching western movies and eating cheese popcorn. We would mix sodas together to see who would get the grossest one. And on some nights, we would lay outside and watch the stars. Now she will never get that again. I physically and mentally hurt now with thoughts of Lyra being alone. Hopefully, I will join her.

That’s all I can think of as I lay here in pain. No matter what way I turn, I hurt. I have resigned the fact that I’m not making it out of here alive.
